Adeline Wong Lin Yien 2301987 (Assignment 2, superpower)
The Day I Woke Up with a Superpower
One day, I woke up at 7:40 and my class started at 8. Panicked, I quickly washed my face, brushed my teeth, put on clothes and shoes, and ran outside. At that moment, one thought appeared in my mind: If I could reach the classroom at a glance, how great would it be? In a flash, I found that what appeared before me was nothing but my classroom. Was I dreaming? I couldn't care much then, so I continued my class.
After class, I tested my power by wishing I was at the
toilet now. Within a second, I was in front of the toilet. Using this
superpower, I could attend school fast and even travel to other countries. No
flights, no baggage, no expenses—It was exhilarating. I visited places I had
only dreamed of—Paris, Tokyo, the Cairo—all in the blink of an eye. The world
felt like my playground.
But I kept using my superpower without knowing the
consequences. More and more people noticed my suspicious whereabouts. I even
saw a video of my sudden appearance within thin air captured by random
strangers and posted on the internet. At first, people thought it was
AI-generated, edited, or that I was just a magician. As the videos kept
surfacing, more views, likes and shares, I did enjoy the fame at first. People even
called me a magician, a special effects genius, or even an illusionist. I
played along, pretending it was all part of a well-planned trick. However, the
fun part ended when the scientists started reaching out. Reporters camped
outside my house. Government agencies sent me cryptic emails, asking for a
“chat.” Up until this moment, I knew that—I couldn’t use my superpower freely
anymore without being watched.
To avoid suspicion, I started living a more ordinary life,
but it was impossible to completely let go of my ability. I missed the freedom,
the thrill of teleporting anywhere at will. But with great power came not just
great responsibility, but also great risk.
One day, while walking down the street, a man in a suit
stopped me. "We know what you can do," he said, slipping a card into
my hand before walking away. My heart pounded. Was he from the government? A
secret organization? I called the number on the card. A calm voice on the other
end gave me an address and a time. Hesitantly, I went. To my surprise, I found
myself in a facility filled with others—people who could control fire,
manipulate objects with their minds, mind control or even turn invisible.
“This is a sanctuary,” the leader explained. “We help people
like you. And in return, you help us.”
They trained me, refining my teleportation abilities. I became part of an elite secret agency that rescued hostages, dismantled dangerous organizations, and handled threats the world wasn’t ready to face. It was dangerous but thrilling. More importantly, they promised to keep me safe from the government, scientists, or any reporters.
From that day on, something strange happened. My online
presence vanished. The videos, the articles, the discussions—gone. It was as if
the world had forgotten I ever had superpowers except for people in the secret
organization. My friends, my family, and even my classmates had no memory of my
abilities. I started to live a double life, by day, I was an ordinary student,
blending in with the crowd. By night, I teleported across the globe, carrying
out missions, saving lives, and uncovering secrets buried deep within society.
People from the secret organization had done something…
clear people's minds perhaps. But I need no worry, at least I’m safe now.
